New Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed that Harry Maguire remains captain of the club.

The experienced centre-back received the armband shortly after his transfer from Leicester City in 2019.

Ten Hag also clarified that Cristiano Ronaldo is in his plans for the new season while answering a number of questions about the striker's future

Ten Hag spoke at his first Tour 2022 press conference to preview Tuesday's game against Liverpool at Bangkok's Rajamangala Stadium.

After confirming at the press conference that "Harry Maguire is the captain", Erik was then asked to explain why he was right for the role.

"Of course I have to get to know all the players and that takes time," the coach told the Manchester United website.

"But he's been an established captain for a few years and he's had a lot of success, so I don't doubt that issue."

The new Reds boss was asked about the Portugal international's absence from his 2022 Tour squad during his pre-match press conference for Tuesday's game against Liverpool in Bangkok.

"He's not with us, and that's for personal reasons," the Dutchman said.

"We are planning with Cristiano Ronaldo for this season.

"That's it and I look forward to working with him."

He added: "Cristiano is part of our plans and we want to succeed together."

Ten Hag was keen to point out that he had already had a very positive conversation with the 37-year-old.

“I had a good conversation with him and I had a very good conversation,” he added.

"(The conversation) is between Cristiano and me," he said. "But what I can confirm is that we had a very good conversation together."
