Today at Tesla's "AI Day" event, Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveiled an early prototype of his humanoid robot Optimus, which emerged from behind a curtain, walked around, waved and "raised the roof" with his hands to the rhythm of techno music.

It was a dicey reveal for the prototype, which seemed somewhat unsteady on its feet. "Literally, the first time the robot worked untethered was on stage tonight," Musk said. Shortly after, three Tesla employees launched a sleeker Optimus model onto the stage supported by a stand that still couldn't stand on its own. He waved and lifted his paws. Later, he collapsed while Musk was talking.

The entire live robot demo lasted about seven minutes, and the company also released a demo video of the prototype Optimus walking around picking up a box and setting it down, slowly watering a plant and moving metal parts in a factory-like setting, while attached to an overhead cable. The video also showed a 3D world view that represents what the Optimus robot can see.

Tesla first announced plans to build a humanoid robot at its AI Day event in August last year. During this previous event, a human appeared wearing a robot-like spandex suit and did the Charleston on stage, which sparked skepticism in the press.

At the AI Event today, Musk and his team pointed out that the walking prototype was an early demonstration developed in about six months using "semi-off-the-shelf actuators" , and that the sleeker model looked much more like the "Version 1 Unit" they wanted to ship. He said he would probably be able to walk in a few weeks.

Project Optimus goals include high-volume production (perhaps "millions of units sold," Musk said), low cost ("likely less than $20,000"), and high reliability. Comparing the Optimus plans to competitors' existing humanoid robots, Musk also pointed out that the Optimus robot would need to have the brain on board to operate autonomously, citing Tesla's work with its automotive autopilot system.
