An electrifying thunderbolt in the Grand Canyon and a rare snow leopard in the Himalayas: the stunning winners of the 2022 Nature Photographer of the Year awards judges chose the winners from more than 20,000 entries from 96 countries around the world revealing photo of polar bears occupying abandoned village on Russian island wins top prize Advertisement

Majestic scenes of nature have been frozen in time with these jaw-dropping photographs.

They were honored in the 2022 Nature Photographer of the Year awards, an annual competition that strives to "show the beauty of nature to the world entire".

This year, judges selected the winners from more than 20,000 entries from 96 countries around the world. Among the submissions to catch their attention are an epic image of lightning striking the red rocks of the Grand Canyon, a striking image of an endangered snow leopard in the Indian Himalayas, a dynamic photo of a whale framed by the Bangkok skyline, and a close-up of a brown bear rummaging through garbage cans in Transylvania.

Topping the podium, however, is a haunting image of polar bears occupying an abandoned village on the Russian island of Kolyuchin in the Chukchi Sea , captured by wildlife photographer Dmitry Kokh, this year's "Nature Photographer of the Year".

The photo is part of a larger series which saw Kokh send his drone - complete with low-noise propellers to avoid disturbing polar bears - above the island, "a place long deserted by people" since its polar weather station closed in 1992.
