Horrific Chimpanzee Attack in 'No' May Have Been Inspired by a True Story

Jordan Peele's latest film 'Nope' has left many talking points for fans around the world. While the plot of the sci-fi horror film about an alien invasion is straightforward, the deeper references and meanings embedded throughout leave a deeper impression. Peele's films are never one-dimensional, as he has earned a reputation for incorporating twists and a heavy dose of social commentary into all of his films.

One of the weirdest aspects of “Nope” is Steven Yeun’s Ricky “Skirt” Park backstory. Jupe reveals to brother-sister duo OJ (Daniel Kaluuya) and Emerald (Keke Palmer) that he was a child actor. One of the shows he was best known for was a popular but short-lived show called "Gordy's Home," and his co-star was a chimpanzee named Gordy.

The backstory of "Gordy's Home" of Jupe in "No"

Although Jupe is a husband and father of three boys, he spends a lot of time dwelling on his childhood, especially his time on the set of "Gordy's Home." The popular show featured Jupe as the young son of a loving family consisting of his mother, father, sister, and Gordy, the titular chimp. Skirt tells how the series became cult. He even has a secret sanctuary for the series and its memorabilia in a hidden room in his office, where a couple paid an obscene sum to spend the night.

Jupe confesses that the series was canceled prematurely because the chimp who played Gordy, scared of a balloon bursting, ended up attacking the cast members. As “Nope” continues, we see more of the attack through flashbacks — gruesome scenes of a blood-covered chimp chasing off-set actors. The most unsettling part is the young girl lying on the ground throughout the flashback. A couch mostly conceals her body, but we see her legs stick out and twitch. When the chimpanzee realizes that she is still moving, he attacks her behind the sofa. Gordy approaches the table under which Jupe has taken refuge, seeking the company of the young actor who has become her companion. Gordy even reaches under the table to punch him. As Jupe backs away, Gordy is shot in the head by someone offscreen.

In the current timeline, Mary Jo, who played Jupe's sister in "Gordy's Home," comes to Jupe's western theme park to see the Star Lasso Experience, where Jupe sacrifices a horse to the alien in heaven for entertainment. Skirt introduces her to the crowd as her first love and co-star. As the camera pans towards her, we see a woman sitting in the stands wearing a hat and a veil to cover her face. Later, when the alien arrives and the wind picks up, we see under the veil. Gordy's mutilation scarred her face forever, as she was the mutilated girl behind the couch.
