A weekend in a rental motorhome in West Sussex? In a normal year, it wouldn't be many people's first choice. But when showing up at the airport with a boarding pass in hand doesn't necessarily mean you're going anywhere, well, that makes perfect sense.

Recent figures suggest that the pandemic has led to a boom in camping and motorhome holidays. One in five adults would have opted for one or the other in the past two years.

So my wife and I, and my seven-year-old son Nicholas decided to join the trend.

The description of our vehicle was pleasantly suggestive. According to the blurb, the converted Mercedes Vario 614D van was a "sexy motorhome" with an Art Deco interior that was guaranteed to "rekindle your relationship". Since Georgia and I got married only a year ago, we were hoping it wasn't strictly necessary. Like I said, it obviously wasn't romantic, but it turned out to be kind of an eye opener - and it was so easy to arrange.
