The style tip of the moment? Just add another necklace | Jess CartnerMorley

I bring great news about an easy style hack for the new season. It fits everyone, flatters everyone, won't make you shiver or give you blisters, and will lift your spirits whether you're going to work, going out to dinner, or going anywhere. You probably don't even need to buy anything. Do you own more than one necklace? Sorted. Because it is. It's the style update of the moment, right there: wear two or three necklaces at once.

It's that simple. Last year it was all about saving your earlobes. Maybe you now have more piercings in one ear than the other. A mix of studs, mini hoops and statement pieces, right? Congratulations to you. But even if you still only wear the two earrings, that's fine too. Just put on a pair of hoop earrings – ideally ones that are a little wonky like you've dented them in your workshop while doing something vaguely artisanal – and we're done, because the style spotlight has passed. from the organized ear to the next assignment, which is the double (or triple) collar. A necklace is pretty. Two or three necklaces are even prettier and cooler to boot.

I started layering necklaces by accident because I wore a big Missoma gold chain with blunt links. most days ever since. Then last year I fell in love with a vintage looking padlock pendant from Kirstie Le Marque and didn't want to give up either, so I started wearing them together. Before long, a single necklace started to read as a bit basic. Recently I came across a longer necklace that I had forgotten about - a gold bar on a long chain - and now I triple most days.

The jewelry is a personal story. That's what engagement and wedding rings are for, in a straightforward way, but the story doesn't have to stop there.

Claire Le Marquand , half of the duo behind Kirstie Le Marque, is never spotted in less than two necklaces "because it's more interesting and more modern," she says. She has two necklaces that she never takes off, then usually adds a third one. "Maybe you have a necklace from your mom that you always wear — you don't need to swap it out, you can layer it," she says. "Start with what you love." However, you don't want a tangle of strings.

Start with a simple string. Nothing too short or tight around the neck; one that sits roughly at your collarbones will be more comfortable and sleeker. If a short necklace has pieces hanging down, they should be flat enough so they don't twist and sit badly. Then add a longer necklace, one with a pendant so that it falls a few inches from the top necklace. The point down lengthens your neck. If you want to go crazy, a third necklace can sit in the space between these two, or hang lower.

It's not just for maximalists. It's a glossy foil for minimalist looks. A plain white t-shirt and jeans turn into something glamorous. In winter, when almost every inch of skin is buried under fabric, the extra shine warms up the emotional tone. It helps remind the world that you are a human being with thoughts and feelings, rather than a walking horseman. Try it: it has more impact than you imagine. Also, did I mention it's easy?
