This In-Demand Minimalist Makeup Brand Is About To Hit The UK | Sali Hugues

During a trip to New York last July, during my usual visit to Sephora in the Meatpacking District, I noticed that a section that should have been filled with products by Merit Beauty was littered with "out of the stock cards". Not that my interest needed to be aroused; I was already craving mustard to try Merit (a minimalist American makeup brand that takes a "wardrobe capsule" for your everyday face) because its founder is Katherine Power, the entrepreneur behind the excellent, reliable Versed skincare, which is already available in the UK. So I took what little I could and got myself directed to checkout.

Merit's arrival in the UK this month has filled the gaps I'm discovering The Minimalist (£40), a foundation and a two-in-one concealer in 20 shades, but I'm already really enjoying it.It's a solid stick with a velvety texture that glides on directly. gently onto skin, then buffed in with the soft, easy-to-use #1 brush (£32) - or any foundation brush you already have - or patted in with fingers for extra coverage. /p>

Unlike many competing brands, Merit's base is almost matte rather than dewy or oily, and is suitable for all skin types. The finish is beautiful, healthy, lively, subtle. Its only weak point from my point of view is also its strength: the small, thin wand is so compact and practical that for a product covering the whole face, it will not last as long as an (expensive) daily foundation.< /p>

I have no such reservations about Clean Lash (£28), a smudge-free true black mascara that washes off easily with warm water. Like any "tube mascara" (which uses polymers rather than traditional waxes to coat the lashes), the effects are more natural than fake, but all Merit products are like that.

Her Signature Lip lipsticks (£28) are more like hydrating balms and lay down a lovely wispy veil of comfortable color. Flush Balm (£30), a cream blush that can just as easily be brushed on the mouth, is truly foolproof: even clumsy fingertips can blend it perfectly in five seconds flat (the peachy pink shade from Beverly Hills works well to everybody).

Where Merit's subtlety will prove most useful, I think, is in her Bronze Balm (£32), a solid stick of super sheer, heavy-duty bronzer to errors that melts as it moves effortlessly under the brush or fingertips. Sunbathers - and I know there are many of you - can finally spend their day in the sun.
