Three children die in Jigawa building collapse

At least three children died in a building that collapsed in the Dutse local government area of ​​Jigawa state on Thursday after heavy rains, police said.

Jigawa Police Spokesperson Lawan Adam said the building collapsed in the Jigawar Tsarki community due to heavy rains that lasted for several hours on Wednesday night.

Police identified the victims as Farida Idris, 6, Mariya Idris, 3, and Bilkisu Yahya, aged one year and six months, all from "Yakasai Jigawar Tsada" village in the council area by Dutse.

Police said the victims died at the scene before they could be rescued.

"Upon receipt of the report, detectives attended the scene, evacuated what was left, and rushed to Dutse General Hospital.

“When they arrived, the doctor on duty certified them dead. The corpses were photographed and handed over to their relatives to be buried according to the Islamic rite.

"Jigawa State Police Command Police Commissioner Aliyu Tafida sends his condolences to the parents, family and loved ones and prays to Allah the Almighty to give them the courage to endure the irreparable loss, the police statement said.

The incident followed the deaths of four women and a seven-month-old baby in a boating accident in the state's Guri local government area.

Torrential rains caused flash flooding in Jigawa, submerging many houses and bridges and also rendering many people homeless.
