"I tried my best to make the last game, but I couldn't play with the intensity and speed required to play for England," Wood said.

Speaking on the BBC's Good Pace for Radio podcast, he added: "I couldn't to work my hip. I hope if necessary I can try to make it right for this game - I don't know if I'll be able to.

"The team played very well last game - if the captain desperately needs me and I'm fit enough, so I'll put my name in the hat like everyone else."

Wood, who made the fastest delivery of the tournament, at 96.15mph against New Zealand, also broke the record for fastest white-ball cricket spell, averaging 92.6mph in his four overs against Afghanistan.

It is understood that batter Dawid Malan, who missed the win by 10 wickets against India due to a groin injury, is also unlikely to be fit.< /p>

On Friday, England coach Matthew Mott told the BBC "there's not much time for them", but has added "I would like to keep some hope".

Wood, who missed the whole summer with an injury elbow, also took six wickets in two matches when England won an away series against Pakistan 4-3 in September and October.

His injury is also of concern considering he is a member of the England test squad for the series in Pakistan, which begins on December 1.

His ability to play at a high pace is considered vital, given the slow speed and low surfaces in Pakistan.
