Three months after leaving for medical treatment abroad, Akeredolu returns

Three months after leaving Nigeria for medical reasons, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State is back in the country, PREMIUM TIMES has learnt.

A source within the state government confirmed his return on Thursday afternoon.

Context

Mr. Akeredolu began a 21-day leave on June 7 and immediately embarked on a medical trip to Germany.

The governor, according to a letter to the state Legislature, was scheduled to return July 6 but remained overseas.

His extended stay sparked much controversy in the state as his officials and family members jostled for control of the government.

FIRS

On July 15, the governor requested, in a letter to state lawmakers, that his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, take over in an “acting” capacity.

Arrival

According to our source, the governor arrived in Ibadan early on Thursday and will rest again at his private residence before heading to Ondo State.

The source requested anonymity because the government and Mr. Akeredolu's family have not yet made an announcement.

He added that some cabinet members were already on their way to wish him a safe return.

However, Mr Akeredolu's wife, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, posted a photo of him in a helicopter on her Instagram account, captioned "at home".
