The video-sharing platform, TikTok, has announced its new policies for political accounts on the media.

In a statement posted to its news site on Wednesday, the company's President of Global Business Solutions, Blake Chandlee, said that while the company "has a long history of banning political advertising", tougher measures have been introduced to ensure that political figures do not have access to the advertising features of the platform.

The statement read in part: "TikTok has long banned political advertising, including paid ads on the platform and creators paid directly to create branded content."

"We currently do this by prohibiting political content in an ad, and we also enforce account-level restrictions.

"This means that accounts belonging to politicians and political parties will automatically have their access to advertising features disabled, which will help us more consistently enforce our existing policy.

"In addition, we will prohibit these accounts from accessing other monetization features.

"Specifically, they will not have access to features such as gifts, tips, and e-commerce, and will not be eligible for our Creator Fund.

"These changes, along with our current ban on political advertising, mean that accounts belonging to governments, politicians and political parties will largely be unable to give or receive money through TikTok's monetization features. , or spend money to promote their content.”

Chandlee added that government agencies will be allowed to advertise in “limited circumstances,” which includes public health and safety. However, in such cases, they will need to work with a TikTok representative.

Another change to the platform is the mandatory verification of "accounts belonging to governments, politicians and political parties". This new policy will begin with the United States as the midterm elections approach.

According to the release, the move aims to "strike a balance between allowing people to discuss issues that affect their lives while protecting the creative and entertaining platform our community desires."
