Film star Tom Holland says getting sober is "the best thing I've ever had never done," after realizing he would "become a slave" to alcohol.

Speaking to the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast, the star said his journey to sobriety started with "a very, very boozy" Christmas last year.

But after deciding to make January dry, he said, "all I could think of was having a drink. That really freaked me out".

"I was just like, 'Wow, maybe I have a little thing with alcohol ."

The realization prompted him to extend his no-drinking rule for another month, but he struggled to resist drinking culture in England.

"I felt like I couldn't be social," Holland said. I couldn't go to the pub and have a lime soda. I couldn't go out to dinner. I was really, really struggling.

"I just thought, like, 'Why? Why am I a slave to this drink? Why am I so obsessed with drinking this drink?'"

Shaken, he set a goal of going six months without drinking and felt he had turned a corner when he celebrated his 27th birthday on June 1.

At that time, he said, he was " the happiest I've ever been in my life."
