Two confirmed dead in building collapse in Uyo

Two people were confirmed dead when a four-storey building collapsed in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state on Saturday.

The building, at Iman Street, near Aka Road in Uyo, was supposed to be six stories high. It collapsed while the contractors were on the fourth floor.

“We recovered one body here, and the other died in hospital from multiple injuries,” National Emergency Management Agency South-South Zone Coordinator Godwin Tepikor said. to reporters in Uyo on Sunday.< /p>

Other injured are receiving treatment at the hospital.

Mr. Tepikor said he received the information about the building collapse around 7 p.m. Saturday, and quickly mobilized the Federal Road Safety Corps, National Security and Civil Defense Corps, Fire Service and Red Cross to the scene.

"I advised them to contact any construction company to mobilize their excavator."

Mr. Tepikor said he suspected the construction workers did not follow construction guidelines.

“Substantial elements may have been used. So if there had been enforcement of building codes, we could have stemmed the tide of building collapse,” he added.

Meanwhile, Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel said the government would punish those responsible for the building collapse.

State Information Commissioner Ini Ememobong revealed this in a statement to Uyo on Sunday.

“The Governor has directed the Commissioner of Works and Fire Department to immediately establish a Board of Inquiry to investigate this unfortunate incident,” Ememobong said in the statement.

“The panel must complete its work within a month, and if the building collapse is found to be the result of negligence or wrongdoing, officials will face the wrath of the law."

Governor Emmanuel has also directed the government, through the Health Commissioner, to take over the "management of survivors".

Mr. Emmanuel offered his condolences to the families who lost loved ones in the incident and wished the survivors a speedy recovery.

He thanked first responders, rescuers and security agencies for the rescue operation.

Many people were killed in Uyo in 2016 when a church building collapsed in the town.
