UNILAG raises tuition fees from N19,000 to N190,250, others

The management of the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos State has reportedly increased the tuition fees for undergraduate students at the institution.

This was contained in a statement dated July 20, 2023 from the Association of Senior Executives of Nigerian Universities, UNILAG Branch, following a meeting with senior management.

The union, in the statement, said the VC had said fees would be increased for UNILAG undergraduate students.

Recall that students at the institution used to pay N19,000, but the management has set new fees at N190,250 for medical students while for courses requiring a laboratory and studio, students have to pay N140,250.

According to SSANU, VC Prof. Folasade Ogunsola met with representatives of the three non-academic staff unions on Thursday July 20 to discuss issues regarding member welfare.

"During the meeting, the proposed fees for UNILAG undergraduate students were disclosed.

"Students without a lab or studio will pay N100,750, those using the lab will pay N140,250 and the medical college will pay N190,250," the statement read.

An SSANU representative at the meeting, Rasaki Yusuf, asked for a discount for staff members with children at the university, but the VC insisted that the new fees were set at the national level and could not be changed for specific categories of students.

Ogunsola, however, gave staff the option of paying in instalments but with a condition to pay one month before the final exams.

Efforts to reach the institution's public relations officer, Alagba Ibraheem, for comment proved futile as calls made by him were not answered and text messages were also not answered.
