Uzodinma went AWOL as Imo burns – PDP

The People's Democratic Party has described as regrettable the failure of Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma to stem growing insecurity in the state.

Spokesperson for the IMO Pdp 2023 Governors campaign, Barr. Gozie Nwachukwu revealed this during a press conference held in Owerri, the state capital, on Tuesday.

Nwachukwu, who was flanked by Governor Imo Pdp 2023 campaign organization new media director Dumebi Ifeanyichukwu, said the governor was missing as insecurity remains a concern.

He further lamented the absence of the state governor for more than 40 days since the swearing in of the Tinubu government, he said that Uzodinmma had moved to Abuja and abdicated his constitutional responsibility to oversee that the lives and property of IMO people are safe.

He added that instead, non-state actors recruited by Uzodinmma had taken over the constitutional roles of security agencies in the IMO state and that this may have contributed to the dire security situation in the state IMO.

“Over the past seven days, parts of Imo state…bullets have been raining down on Imo. We are seriously concerned,” the party publicist said.

He then called on President Bola Tinubu to open an independent investigation into the wanton killings in the state.

"That is why we call on the President and Commander-in-Chief to urgently set up an independent and discreet investigation team, devoid of any input from Hope Uzodinma and his cronies."

The PDP spokesperson also took the opportunity to express the sincere commiseration of the party's gubernatorial candidate, Senator Samuel Nnaemeka Anyanwu, to those who have suffered irreparable and terrible losses due to the collapse of the security architecture in the state.

This comes days after suspected gunmen set fire to part of Amaraku Market in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area in Imo State

The thugs, who wreaked havoc on Friday, also razed vehicles and property belonging to traders, mostly women, and fled to another community, Obolo, also in the LGA, where they set fire to utility vehicles.

A non-governmental organization, the International Society for Civil Liberties and the Rule of Law, Intersociety, claimed that "as many as 1,600 unarmed citizens of Imo State were killed while 300 others were disappeared without a trace between January 2021 and May 2023, a period of 29 months.”
