Vaccine-derived polio can lead to disability in children, Oyo government warns parents

The OYO State Government, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and Rotary International, says its four-day Vaccine-Derived Polio Outbreak Response Campaign (ORP) aims to ensure that all children in the state are protected against vaccine-derived polio. poliomyelitis.

WHO State Coordinator Dr Philip Zorto, speaking at its launch at Oke Apon Primary Health Care Centre, Ibadan North, said the vaccination campaign responds to an outbreak of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus and ensures that all children under five get vaccinated.

According to him, "if a child is not vaccinated and such a child is infected with vaccine-derived poliomyelitis, such a child can transmit the virus to other children. So, we want all children are vaccinated. When we achieve this, we will be safe to say that the immunity of children in Oyo State is strengthened.

"Even if the virus is in the environment, they cannot be infected and they cannot be affected by the virus. Parents should take advantage of this to protect their children. If they are infected, they can be paralyzed. It is the parent's negligence in not having the children vaccinated that causes the paralysis."

Dr Zorto urged faith and community leaders to be at the forefront of the OPV campaign to ensure that no eligible child misses vaccination against all vaccine-preventable diseases.

In his remarks, the Executive Secretary of the Oyo State Primary Health Care Board, Dr. Muideen Olatunji, said that although Nigeria is one of the countries that has succeeded in eradicating polio , occasional outbreaks of vaccine-derived poliovirus still occur.

Dr Olatunji said, “The answer is to give all children another round of polio vaccinations to make sure everyone is well protected. We're starting the campaign due to a vaccine-derived polio outbreak we detected in the state a few months ago, which is the essence of the campaign

"We have enough vaccinators for every local government in the state; security personnel have been integrated into the vaccinator team to act as vaccinators or guards in hard-to-reach or compromised areas of the state as well."
