Long live Magenta! What Pantone's Color of the Year Tells Us About 2023

There is between blue and red, hot and cold, to be found on a spectrum of its own. It is 150 years old but remains focused on the future, both digital and essential. It is – to quote its creators – “brave, fearless and thrilling”. It's Viva Magenta, the Pantone color of 2023.

If you've never heard of this color, it's quite deliberate. For nearly 25 years, the color-matching firm has taken it upon itself to choose a hue that - according to its in-depth interdisciplinary analysis of dominant hues in art, fashion, design and beyond - not only captures the zeitgeist, but sets the tone for the year ahead.

After the muted evening blue of 2020, the 2021 co-winner of pebble gray and hazard warning yellow, and this year's brilliant periwinkle shade, Pantone has opted for this "bold" shade of carmine red for 2023.

In popular culture at least, shades of magenta are everywhere, from makeup to berry-colored smoky eyes of Charlize Theron's Marvel heroine Clea in the aristocratic plum western outfit of Emily Blunt in The English. avant-garde of fashion – chose a b lazer magenta Gucci announce val's arrival in Venice for the premiere of Don't Worry Darling, while just last week the Princess of Wales wore an Emilia Wickstead coat-dress and matching hat in this jewel tone to entertain the President South -African Ramaphosa.
