Vue spends its second biggest weekend thanks to the record opening of "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer"

Barbie by Greta Gerwig and Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan gave British cinema chain Vue its second-biggest weekend ever as moviegoers flocked in record numbers to catch the Barbenheimer double bill.

Vue said last weekend also marked its biggest weekend in four years. More than a fifth of all Vue cinema customers booked tickets to see both films. Vue has recorded over 2,000 sold-out sessions of Barbie.

Starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, Barbie grossed $182 million at the international box office this weekend, Warner Bros.' biggest offshore opening yet. ever made for a non-franchise film. The pic is on track to become the biggest movie of 2023, ahead of Super Mario Bros and is the biggest opening weekend ever for a non-franchise original film for the UK and Irish market box office.

Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan's explosive biopic Oppenheimer has landed a staggering $93.7 million overseas. For both titles, performances exceeded expectations, driven by strong reactions from critics and audiences as well as the energy of the playful Barbenheimer phenomenon, which helped draw audiences to theaters.

Both films also set records in the United States, with Barbie scoring the biggest domestic opening of 2023, beating Super Mario Bros.' $146.4 over the 3-day weekend. The film is also Warner Bros.' highest-grossing film. with $49.5 million.

Oppenheimer is Christopher Nolan's third highest-grossing opening weekend, both globally and domestically, after The Dark Knight Rises ($249M, $161M) and The Dark Knight ($198M, $158M $). The pic is also the biggest single-day and single-date global opening weekend for a biopic, topping Bohemian Rhapsody ($124 million). In the US, it is the third-biggest biopic debut after American Sniper ($89.2 million) and Passion of the Christ ($83.8 million).

"Vue had its highest weekend admissions since Avengers: Endgame in 2019 with the release of Barbie and Oppenheimer, proving that when the movies are here, our customers will come and watch them on the big screen," said Tim Richards, CEO and Founder of Vue International.

"Barbie is on track to become the biggest movie of 2023 and has a good chance of entering the Top 10 highest-grossing movies of all time. This is an incredibly exciting time for the industry, and we expect this trend to continue in the weeks to come."
