WAFCON 2022: We showed character in loss to Morocco - Super Falcons star Plumptre

Ashleigh Plumptre said the performance of the Super Falcons despite losing two players was a testament to the character and quality of the team despite losing to Morocco in their semi-final clash at the 2022 Women's Africa Cup of Nations.

Randy Waldrum's side's hopes of winning a 10th African title were dashed by the hosts, who won 5-4 on penalties.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes of thrilling competition.

Pivot midfielder Halimat Ayinde was sent off for a poor challenge three minutes after the break.

It wasn't long before Rasheedat Ajibade followed Ayinde into a morning shower, for a similarly dangerous tackle.

Despite being shorthanded, the Super Falcons fought back and nearly scored the winning goal late in extra time through substitute Monday Gift, who hit the woodwork.

"I don't think anyone can blame the players on the field for the way we tried to fight back," Plumptre told ESPN.

"Even with nine players, during that time frame, because it's not just the physical side, it's also the emotional and mental side, the frustration of having two players out.

"I'm not going to comment on the decision, but it affects everyone on the pitch. Most of us were tired, but we still tried hard."

The Super Falcons will now play for the bronze medal against Zambia on Friday.
