Wagner chief Prigozhin confirmed dead by Russian authorities after genetic testing

After genetic testing, Russian investigators have confirmed that Wagner boss Eugene Prigojine was one of 10 people who died in Wednesday's plane crash.

The private plane that crashed in a field northwest of Moscow on its way to St Petersburg had previously been identified as carrying Prigozhin, the leader of an unsuccessful uprising against the Kremlin.

“As part of the investigation of the plane crash in the Tver region, molecular genetic examinations were carried out,” reads a statement posted on the Telegram channel of the Russian Investigative Committee.< /p>

"According to their results, the identity of the 10 dead has been established, they match the list indicated on the flight sheet," the statement said.

Dmitriy Utkin, a trusted lieutenant of Prigozhin since the start of the Wagner Group, and Valeriy Chekalov, a senior collaborator of Prigozhin, were also killed. Three crew members died.

The accident occurred two months to the day after Prigozhin's attempted mutiny against Russian military leaders.

Prigozhin was once an elusive figure, who rose to prominence after his Wagner Group scored rare battlefield successes for Russia during their invasion of Ukraine. But he has become an increasingly outspoken critic of the Russian campaign and its leadership.

In June, Prigozhin and his Wagner troops seized key military sites and marched towards Moscow, where the Kremlin had deployed heavily armed troops on the streets. But before they could face off, a deal was struck that ended the rebellion and sent Prigozhin and his fighters to neighboring Belarus.

This is the biggest challenge to Russian President Vladimir Putin's regime in 23 years. He also painted a target on Prigozhin's back, with some experts speculating the warlord was a walking dead man.

It is not yet known exactly what caused the crash.

US President Joe Biden suggested on Wednesday that Putin may have been involved. "I don't know exactly what happened, but I'm not surprised," he said.

To date, no evidence has been presented indicating the involvement of the Kremlin or Russian security services in the accident. The cause of the incident remains unknown and Russian authorities have opened a criminal investigation.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov denied claims that the Kremlin might have been involved in the crash, calling such speculation an “absolute lie.”
