Wales on wheels: bikepacking for novices

Take a bike, add a tent, hit the road: welcome to the pure pleasures of bikepacking. As the name suggests, this is a multi-day ride where a rider puts camping kit in various bags on their bike frame. It's the perfect cycling adventure for purists and is quickly becoming a popular way to explore the wildest corners of the UK on two wheels. the journey can seem a bit daunting for newbies like me who don't know their panniers from their puncture repair kit. That's where new travel agency Roam Bikepacking comes in, offering self-guided camping and cycling trips on some of the most gravelled mountain trails in Wales. Founder Joe Armstrong designed his two- to three-day routes to help would-be riders who don't have the confidence (or the kit) to explore solo. Roam provides a pre-packaged bike with everything you need for camping, reserves pitches and makes reservations at great pubs along the way. Then he gives you a map and sets you free - so all you have to do is pedal.

Roam offers adventure weekends to choose from all over the country of Wales to suit different fitness levels, and our journey takes place over the remote mountain passes of southern Snowdonia. Joe calls this route "challenging but rewarding" and promises we'll cover 100 miles in three days over rolling hills, coastal roads and as much gravel as our tires can chew.
