Watch an amateur CNC guru play with a $100,000 machine

Winston Moy may not be your average hobbyist CNC user. His methodical and scientific approach is thorough and intelligent. He really pushes the hobby CNC machines he has access to, to their limits for finishing and clean cuts - unlike me, who just breaks stuff, no matter how ugly, because the math is tedious.

Winston has had the chance to play with a serious machine though, and that's something I find fascinating. Our small hobby machines are essentially toys compared to the big CNC mills you'll find in a factory.

Winston was able to play with a Datron NEO. In terms of CNC mills, the Datron NEO is still tiny. The entire unit is about the size of an arcade cabinet. It still won't satisfy my desire to see Winston go wild on a car-sized machine, but it's still fascinating to see the differences between a high-end manufacturing machine and our home tools. p>

Typically, Winston really analyzes the differences not only in the power and stiffness of the machine, but also in things like the time savings of having a tool changer, a better spindle and a more large working area.

There's nothing groundbreaking here, but I found it really fascinating to watch Winston explore this.
