Former Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima has denounced the migration of Nigerians to European countries for greener pastures via Libya.

The PUNCH reports that as many as 774 stranded Nigerians were repatriated from Libya between August 2021 and June 1, 2022.

But Shettima believed the country needed to be fixed to end the migration of citizens crossing the desert from Nigeria to Libya in hopes of reaching Europe.

He spoke at the inauguration ceremony of Northern Operations Editor of The Nation Newspapers, Yusuf Ali, as the 11th President of the Rotary Club of Abuja, Maitama.

Shettima, however, called for unity among Nigerians to overcome the challenges plaguing the country.

He said, "We have to make this country work. Nigerians would not need to go through Libya to get to Europe to survive. I believe if we are united, Nigeria will survive and that's why I'm proud of the Rotary club."

Shettima also urged Nigerians to dedicate their lives to the service of humanity, adding that "individualism and the cult of money" made life unpleasant in the country.

He said, "Every life devoted to professional excellence and the good of the community represents the kind of life we should value, especially given our submergence by an overweening cult of the cult of money; l 'individualism, and a crass materialism, which has increasingly made life so mean and brutal and short, in our country, in the words of the political philosopher, Thomas Hobbes."

Asked about the scramble for the APC vice-presidential candidate, Shettima declined to comment.

He said, “This is a non-partisan event, it would be an insult to make a political comment here. When the time is right, we'll talk about politics."

In his address, Ali called on the government to ensure that Nigerians have access to basic infrastructure.

He warned that failure to do so would spell loss for the nation.

Ali said, "If all Nigerians do not have access to basic needs, we cannot succeed as a nation. We have abundant human resources but our souls are weak and dysfunctional."
