West Ham 3-1 FCSB: Hammers come from behind to win Conference League

Goals from Jarrod Bowen, Emerson Palmieri and Michail Antonio helped West Ham beat Romanian side FCSB in the Europa Conference League.

The Europa League Conference Group B opener took place at the London Stadium despite news of Queen's passing, following instructions from the Football Association and UEFA.

There have been discussions between the governing bodies and West Ham over the cancellation of the match.

But it was decided that with thousands of fans, including 3,000 Romanians, already in the stadium at the time of Buckingham Palace's announcement, the match should go ahead.

So, in the heart of the Olympic Park named after Queen Elizabeth, there was a minute of reflection before kick-off and a spontaneous chorus of God Save The Queen from the crowd, while players from both clubs wore black armbands.

Then goals from Bowen, Emerson and Antonio saw West Ham, twice knocked out of the Europa League by Romanian side Astra Giurgiu in 2015 and 2016, come from behind to beat a 13th-placed side of the Liga 1 of the country.

FCSB, once part of former European Cup winners Steaua Bucharest, took a shock lead in the 34th minute when Darius Olaru broke free on West Ham's right side and struck in a low cross that Andrei Cordea tapped to the far post.

The Hammers should have equalized before half-time when Flynn Downes played Gianluca Scamacca, but the big-money Italian signing deflected his shot wide.

Boss David Moyes made a triple substitution at the break with Antonio, Jarrod Bowen and record holder Lucas Paqueta replacing Said Benrahma, Manuel Lanzini and Scamacca.

They equalized in the 65th minute when Cornet challenged FCSB goalkeeper Stefan Tarnovanu for a high ball and French referee Benoit Bastien pointed the spot.

Cornet had to leave after receiving a long treatment before Bowen stepped in to fire the penalty high into the net.

Nine minutes later, former Chelsea defender Emerson surged from a rush on goal, and with a minute left Antonio broke through the FCSB defense to seal the victory.

The Hammers are due to travel to Danish side Silkeborg for their second group stage game on Thursday.
