What to Know About Planet Mandalore Ahead of 'The Mandalorian' Season 3

"The Mandalorian" is about to head to a place it's never been in season three: Mandalore itself. After removing his helmet several times, Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) must travel to the Mandalorian homeworld to atone for what he believes to be a sin. Additionally, he is now in possession of the Darksaber, which historically grants one the ability to rule Mandalore and the Mandalorians who have always called it home.

However, Mandalore itself is in ruins, mostly abandoned and decimated. How did it happen? Ahead, we break down the complex history of the planet and why the Mandalorians are scattered throughout the galaxy.

Mandalore's story

Mandalore the planet made its grand entrance into Star Wars canon in the 'Clone Wars' animated series, which spans the time period between 'Attack of the Clones' and 'Revenge of the Sith'. At this time, the planet is ruled by Duchess Satine, who tries to keep it out of the conflict between the separatists and the republic. But many Mandalorians disagree, believing that war and fighting — not pacifism — is key to Mandalorian culture. These dissenters include Duchess Satine's sister, Bo-Katan Kryze. The strongest opposition to Satine's rule comes from Deathwatch, a terrorist group; their leader Pre Vizsla even has the Darksaber. They end up allying with the Sith Lord Darth Maul to take over the planet.

But the alliance between the two groups crumbles, and Maul kills Pre and takes the sword. Satine is also killed. Bo-Katan then teams up with Obi-Wan Kenobi and the Republic to take over the planet, but after being installed as regent, she is ousted by Empire-backed forces.

The story picks up in the animated series "Rebels" when Sabine Wren obtains the Darksaber. She decides to give it to Bo-Katan so she can rule Mandalore again.

Why are there no Mandalorians on Mandalore?

Unfortunately, the Empire is still fighting back. During the Great Purge of Mandalore, they attacked the planet and killed everyone there. Bo-Katan and his Nite Owls survived, but most of the Mandalorians perished, and those that remain are now scattered across the galaxy. Din is part of a group called the Children of the Watch who lived on a moon and were thus able to avoid the purge. It is unknown how many Mandalorians remain in the galaxy. In the present time of "The Mandalorian", the planet is...
