WHO declares support for implementation of NHIA Act

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared its commitment to support the full implementation of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) Act which was recently enacted in Nigeria.

WHO Technical Officer on Health Financing, Fahdi Dkhimi made the announcement while leading a delegation that paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, in Abuja

Dkhimi, while expressing his commitment to support the operationalization of the recently signed NHIA, added that the visit was aimed at identifying possible ways to effectively operationalize the NHIA Act for the benefit of Nigerians.

Earlier, the Minister of Health praised the WHO team, saying the move was a welcome development.

He revealed some of the constraints facing the program, including infrastructure development, human resources and investment models.

"Most of the investment has gone to very large, visible hospitals that are not being used much at the expense of smaller primary health care centers in rural areas," Ehanire said.

The Minister further called for investments and a higher standard of care at the suburban level in order to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health, Mr. Mahmuda Mamman, said that the law enacted a few years ago has recently been signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The laws, he said, provide for the NHIA to implement programs for affected groups, including federal public servants, and establish a vulnerable group fund, a portion of which may be invested by the NHIA.
