Governor Ortom launches bill to protect Benue widows

The Benue State Government has introduced a Bill to establish the Benue State Widows Commission and to prohibit harmful practices against widows and protect them from acts of abuse. exploitation, punishment and related purposes

The bill, according to the state governor, if passed by the state House of Assembly and signed into law, would end one of the age-old negative practices among the people and become a point of reference and emulation in other parts of the country.

In a statement released by Terver Akase, Governor Samuel Ortom's special adviser on media and publicity and made available to reporters in Makurdi on Saturday, the Ortom administration's decision to enact the law is based on the fact that there are several ethnic groups in the state with various cultural norms and practices that negatively impact widows upon the death of their husbands.

The statement read in several parts: "This includes, but is not limited to, disinheriting the property of a deceased husband, banishment from the home of a deceased husband, being forced to marry a relative of the deceased husband, etc.

"The Benue State Council has held that in some cases a widow is treated as property of the deceased to be inherited by her relatives.

"Most often, these widows have children for the deceased and have the task of feeding the children without any help from the parents of the deceased. In some cases, some are deprived of their basic rights enshrined in the 1999 Constitution.
