World Teachers' Day: Jigawa NUT calls for more allowances

The Nigerian Teachers Union, NUT, Jigawa State Branch, has called on the state government to introduce a stipend for teachers who teach in hard-to-reach areas.

NUT State Chairman Comrade Yunusa Abdulkadir said this during a briefing to reporters to commemorate World Teachers Day, in dutse.

He explained that the lack of teachers was the main problem affecting the sector in Jigawa State and the whole country.

Yunusa said there was a shortage of about 30,000 teachers in Jigawa State.

According to him, "the current administration has increased the number of schools from 1982 to over 3400, recruited over 1900 teachers and hired 4500 J-teach teachers to solve the problem."

He urged state and local governments to embark on massive teacher recruitment to address the issue of effective service delivery.

The President, however, commended Governor Badaru Abubakar for prompt payment of teachers' salaries, promotions, teacher training and provision of teaching materials.

He also urged teachers to reciprocate government efforts by pledging to fulfill their responsibilities.
