Perhaps that's how Taina and her best friend Renée take to the screen so easily as young women of color. Their identities are not a drawback or a superpower, but rather a part of who they are. Or maybe it's the show's triple threat plan. We've gotten used to child stars like Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez doing it all, but that wasn't the norm in 2002.

The series was fundamental for a generation of Latinas, because it was the first time that so many of us had seen ourselves on screen.
