Youths protest as security guards shoot dead Anambra man

An as yet unidentified man was shot dead by security guards in Ogidi community, Idemili North Local Government Area in Anambra State .

While some people in the community accused a vigilante of being responsible for shooting the victim, other people in the community alleged that a Department of State Services official pulled the trigger that killed the man. .

PUNCH Metro understood that the victim was at home preparing to visit his wife who had just given birth when a suspect, identified simply as China , was being chased by security guards , ran into his house.

In an effort to apprehend the suspect, it was learned that one of those responsible opened fire and that a stray bullet killed the victim.

An eyewitness, who spoke to our correspondent anonymously for security reasons, said the incident then sparked a series of protests in the area as young people from the community took the corpse to the local government secretariat to express their grievances on the development.

Protesters also blocked the entrance to the secretariat with the corpse as they insisted on seeing the president but were prevented from entering by soldiers.

A source said: "An innocent man was shot and killed by DSS officials this morning. Security officers were looking for a cultist who had rushed into the deceased's compound. The man just woke up and they were about to pray, but he excused himself to urinate outside, and the next thing was a gunshot.

"We heard that the security guards said they thought it was the man they were chasing that they had shot. The dead man didn't even know someone had entered his property.

"He just went outside to urinate but was hit by the bullet before returning to his family members for morning prayers. He had also planned to visit his wife who had just going to bed early in the morning. He hadn't even seen his newborn baby. He is the only child of his parents."

Confirming the incident, State Police Public Relations Officer DSP Tochukwu Ikenga said law and order had been restored to the area.

"The Deputy Police Commissioner for Operations led officers into the Ogidi community following a protest by members of the community who alleged that a member of the security guards had fired on the 'one of the natives of the community.< /p>

“In the meantime, law and order have been restored to the area and the suspect has been arrested with the recovered arm. Further details will be communicated,” Ikenga said.
