Zac Efron on the role of Chickie Donohue, the man who delivered beer in a war zone

The Greatest Beer Run Ever is the kind of title you might expect a LadBible video, rather than a feature film released during awards season.

And while the new Apple TV movie, which puts starring Zac Efron and Russell Crowe, may not be traditional Oscar bait, it's worth looking past its somewhat trivial title.

Director Peter Farrelly's previous film, Green Book, won Best Picture in 2019, meaning there's significant interest in the story he chose for his latest project.

The Greatest Beer Run Ever follows the true story of Chickie Donohue, an American Marine who, in 1968, traveled around the world to deliver a crate of beer to his comrades who fought in the Vietnam War.

At that time, soldiers' morale was low, so the New Yorker embarked on a four-day trip month with a (presumably very heavy) sack of beer on his back, to cheer them up.

Delivering beer to enlisted men in your neighborhood is a fun and games, until Donohue gets there and is faced with the rather brutal realities of war. (A character tells him that the expedition is "the dumbest thing I've ever heard.") Donohue himself had served four years in the Marines, but had seen no combat.

"Tonally it starts light," Farrelly told reporters earlier this month after the film premiered in Toronto. "The stupidity of this guy trying to bring his friends a beer in Vietnam is just crazy, and you see him smile, then when he gets to Vietnam, reality hits and the tone changes, but that's natural.< /p>
