Zamfara State Police arrested 12 people suspected of various offenses related to banditry, arms trafficking and political violence.

Four locally made rifles, parts of an AK-47 rifle, 100 rounds of live AK-47 ammunition, seven rounds, a cutlass and a bunch of charms were recovered.

The suspects were paraded to police headquarters in Gusau by command spokesman SP Mohammed Shehu, who said five of the suspects were political thugs arrested in connection with the sporadic shootings which resulted in the murder of one person and the wounding of eleven others.

The suspects, according to Shehu, are Lawali Yakubu, Aminu Abubakar, Shuaibu Mohammed, Abdulmumini Bawa and Sirajo Yahaya.

Shehu said, "On October 15, 2022, at approximately 6:15 p.m., Zamfara State Police Command received a distress call that armed political thugs carrying sophisticated weapons, including locally made rifles and cutlass, sporadically fired at innocent people in Gusau.

"As a result of this, one person was killed and about eleven others injured are currently receiving treatment at Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital in Gusau.

"The command, to limit the situation and arrest the perpetrators, reinforced its tactical officers, after seeing the police officers, the thugs began to shoot, thus putting the lives of the police officers and peace-loving citizens at risk.

"However, the police acted professionally and used minimal force, which led to the arrest of five suspects in possession of locally manufactured weapons, while 'others fled.

"The investigation is ongoing and the suspects will be brought to justice once the investigation is complete."
