NHS bosses have ordered extra supplies of antibiotics delivered to pharmacies across the country in the fight against Strep A.

Parents have reported shortages of antibiotics in some places, including the liquid version of penicillin, which is often given to children.

Sir Stephen Powis, medical director of NHS England, said wholesalers had been tasked with producing antibiotics to meet demand following the rise in cases.

He told the BBC on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg: "We have a lot of antibiotics.

"We have asked people to prescribe them a little earlier and the government is working with wholesalers.

"The supply chain is working very well, I think we'll see these supplies hitting pharmacies as we speak."

The number of young people who have died since the summer of contracting strep A in the UK currently stands at 16.
