Ruling party candidate Bola Tinubu has been declared the winner of Nigeria's presidential election amid protests from his political rivals.

Two main opposition candidates had already demanded a new vote in Africa's most populous country before the decision was taken early Wednesday.

The overnight announcement is now expected to lead to a legal challenge by the 70-year-old president-elect's main opponents, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi.

Former Vice President Abubakar is no stranger to disputes in the electoral process, having appealed his own runner-up in 2019 before his lawsuit was ultimately thrown out.

On Tuesday, the two main opposition parties claimed that delays in uploading election results from each of Nigeria's 176,000 voting units to a national portal had paved the way for irregularities.

But the ruling party has urged the opposition to accept defeat, with an All Progressives Congress spokesman saying: "This election has already been won by our candidate, according to results reported at election collection centers. 'State',

Results announced live on TV after 4 a.m. by the Independent National Electoral Commission showed that Mr Tinubu got 8,794,726 votes, while Mr Abubakar came second with 6,984,520.

Mr. Obi in third place garnered 6,101,533 votes, according to the tally.

The celebrations had already started late Tuesday at the national secretariat of the ruling party, where supporters of Mr. Tinubu had gathered in anticipation of his victory.
