Nine women had their glasses 'spiked' at a summer party attended by the German Chancellor, officials have confirmed.

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) said at least nine women fell ill following the invitation-only event attended by Chancellor Olaf Scholz and MPs.

An SPD spokesperson confirmed an article in the Berlin newspaper Tagesspiegel about the alleged spike, adding: "There is a lot of emotion."

All concerned have been advised to press charges, with police now launching a criminal investigation.

The spokesperson did not rule out other cases, with the SPD emailing everyone invited to the event on Wednesday.

They called the incident a "monstrous act which we immediately reported to the parliamentary police".

Around 1,000 people joined the Chancellor and MEPs at the traditional, invitation-only SPD summer party ahead of the parliamentary recess.

“It was an internal event. You could only enter with an invitation,” the spokesperson said.

"There is still a lot of uncertainty, the police are investigating."

A spokesperson said: "After attending a summer party last Wednesday in Tiergarten, a woman complained of feeling unwell, dizzy and memory loss.

“According to prior knowledge, the 21-year-old was at a summer party hosted by a party in Grosse Querallee from 3:30 p.m.
