Nurses revealed the extent of staff shortages, with 8 in 10 saying there were not enough to provide adequate care on their last shift.

A senior A&E nurse told a Royal College of Nursing survey of almost 20,000 nurses: 'I wouldn't want my family cared for here.'

The results of the shock come 11 days before the nurses' first walkout.

Another community nurse recounted how patients became seriously ill as overworked nurses lacked signs of deteriorating health.

Last night RCN General Secretary Pat Cullen said: “Stories like these are all too familiar to our members struggling with record nursing vacancies, being underpaid and [ facing] year-round pressures.

"Ministers have ignored our warnings, spending billions on agency staff to fill labor shortages when what is needed is serious investment in nursing, including including fair compensation.

"Politicians have the power to stop strikes, but they must act fast or 100,000 nurses will leave."
