'Only Murders in the Building': All of Meryl Streep's Easter Eggs Inside Loretta's Apartment

In Hulu's "Only Murders in the Building" new third season star Meryl Streep , plays Loretta Durkin, a struggling actor with a scattered and quirky mind. When production designer Rich Murray received the creative brief, he was told, “She is charming and warm and has lived in the same studio for 35 to 40 years. With that, Murray sprinkled Easter eggs galore as a tribute to Streep's illustrious career.

Murray first had to come up with a concept for the space and was inspired by the film by 1951 “An American in Paris. Jerry Mulligan's (Gene Kelly) apartment was ideal. tight in the corners, and so we kind of pull from that."

Apart from showrunner John Hoffman's initial brief, Murray received no other memos on the design requirements, so he "decided to attack with all the easter eggs and inside jokes you could find. With over 95 credits under his belt, it wasn't hard for Murray to dive into the Streep's work and turn Loretta's apartment into a treasure.

In Episode 5, Martin Short's Oliver dines at Loretta's apartment, and the audience can finally get a detailed look at his humble abode. Here, Murray presents a few surprises – some obvious, some less so.

‘Suffragette‘ – 2015

The framed hanging tea towel is a nod to the 2015 film "Suffragette" which Streep starred in Britain's political role. activist Emmeline Pankhurst. Murray says, "It's hanging between the window. His character's name is on the tea towel. Suffragette is a magazine that came out in the early 1900s and it was an activist pamphlet, so we put his name on it. »

'Kramer versus Kramer' – 1979

The "Kramer vs. Kramer" tribute is on Loretta's refrigerator door.

Murray says: "It faithfully mimics the bulletin board above his son Billy's bed Kramer in the movie. And there's a Christmas card from his character to Billy. So we recreated that card and hung the pictures around it."
