A grandmother has been discovered inside cardboard boxes after being abandoned by a family in the latest shocking example of a horrific trend that has been crudely dubbed "granny dumping".

The elderly woman was left on the edge of a public road without food.

Social media then witnessed public outrage as the woman's own family left her alone with only a few blankets.

The woman was found by neighbors in the Joaquín Colombres neighborhood in Puebla, Mexico.

Concerns grew when the women were seen wandering past a business on December 25th Street.

His fragile condition prompted residents to call emergency services for help.

When she was discovered, she was offered bread and coffee, as she obviously hadn't eaten in a while.

Staff from the municipal DIF system arrived on the scene and the grandmother then admitted that it was in fact her own family who had deliberately left her behind.

She is currently in custody at the DIF premises, reports The Daily Star.

Unfortunately, this case is not completely unique. An American took his dementia-stricken father on a flight from Los Angeles to the UK where he too was later abandoned.
