Rohit is the joint of the competition -most successful captain, alongside MS Dhoni.

He should still play for Mumbai.

"This is part of legacy building and stays true to MI's philosophy of being ready for "future," said global head of Mumbai performance Mahela Jayawardene.

"We express our gratitude to Rohit Sharma for his exceptional leadership; his tenure as captain of Mumbai Indians since 2013 has been nothing short of extraordinary.

"His leadership not only brought unprecedented success to the team, but also solidified its place among the best captains in IPL history."

Mumbai had recently signed Pandya from Gujarat Titans , whom he led to the IPL title in 2022 and the final in 2023, with the long-term goal of replacing Rohit as captain.

Mumbai's decision may come as a shock, but it fits with the franchise's trend of changing captains. Pandya will be Mumbai's fifth captain since their creation in 2008, after Sachin Tendulkar, Harbhajan Singh, Ricky Ponting and Rohit.

Rohit has won 87 matches out of 158 as captain in the IPL with a win rate of 55.06%.

IPL 2024 begins on March 23, 2024 and ends on May 29.
