Pet Chihuahua mutilated by a cougar during a night walk

A dog owner mourns the loss of his Chihuahua after a walk.

The attack happened in the Hollywood Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles while an owner was walking his chihuahua dog Piper.

After footage revealed the devastating attack, the California owner told KTLA that they were walking at night when they suddenly felt a tug on the leash.

Cougars, also known as cougars, are generally more active at night

Daniel Jimenez said, "I felt the tug and heard Piper scream. I turned around and just saw a face. I didn't know what it was.

"My wife and I got Piper in 2014. We rescued her and she was just the nicest dog."

The National Park Service said the specific puma involved is known as P-22 and is being tracked by the agency using a collar.

P-22 is said to have a history and was responsible for the death of a koala at the Los Angeles Zoo in 2016.

Known as the "Hollywood Cat," the agency said P-22 is the oldest cat in their study and is around 11 years old, which is unusual for a puma to the wild state.

What happened to Piper was described as "extremely rare" by the agency, which told CNN that the big cats are simply "opportunistic hunters".
