Playing an older Picard is a double-edged sword for Patrick Stewart

As anyone of a certain age can attest, much of the anxiety that accompanies youth can eventually be overcome. That was certainly the case for Patrick Stewart, who feels bolder and less rushed than decades ago. He seems to be more confident in his decisions and is ready to push himself further than in the past. He became more instinctive as he continued to NPR :

“I'm braver than when I was 35. I'm not afraid to take risks. And I don't judge myself. well . It's not enough. You could have done it differently. You could have done it better. It prevents spontaneity and real feeling from going into something. So I'm braver now than I was when I was much younger.

He may not have the exact mental acumen he had 30 years ago, but Stewart has, in 2022, affected a more natural style of play. The "We're not here for fun" Stewart has been replaced by someone quite the opposite: an actor who leads through the emotional faculties. Although Stewart received an intensive and classical training, his new approach to his craft seems much less based on overwhelming intellectual rigor. At almost 82 years old, Stewart is finally confident.

The already completed third season of "Star Trek: Picard" will air in Spring 2023. Marina Sirtis, Gates McFadden, Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn and Jonathan Frakes will also return. This will be the last time Stewart will face Picard.
