Fold, Eat, Repeat: Three Lunar New Year Meatball Recipes from Rosheen Kaul
My family celebrates the Lunar New Year in the Singaporean tradition. And like many cultures that celebrate, the focus is on the dining table. On the menu: steamed whole fish, yee sung 魚生 (prosperity salad), longevity noodles, braised pork belly, abalone and pan-fried New Year's cake, as well as more regional specialties. Each dish symbolizes health, prosperity or good fortune.
In Chinese festivals, dumplings occupy an important place, because they look like bags of money, and they say that eating them brings wealth. Making dumplings is a wonderful way to bring the family together, and rolling, filling and creasing - and eating - together is a delicious way to welcome the New Year.
Of course, any time of the year is a good time for dumplings. Gong xi fa cai!
