A father who first moved to the UK nearly 20 years ago has been barred from returning to the country after returning to Poland on holiday.

Maciej Szulczynski has lived between the two countries since 2004 before deciding to make Britain his permanent home in January.

He then submitted an EU Settlement Scheme (EUS) application, in line with Brexit rules, which limit travel.

However, upon leaving the country temporarily in April, border officials told him upon his return that he could not return at all until a final decision on his status was made.

Six months later, the 49-year-old is now waiting in limbo in his homeland, struggling to earn money after having to give up a major building contract in the UK.

His sister Joanna Blackey, who lives in Caerphilly, South Wales, told the Mirror: "It's ridiculous. Why did they let him out without telling him? If he had known , he would not have left.

"Even the customs officers could not clearly explain why he was not allowed to return."

After passing through the Channel Tunnel on May 5, the father-of-four was arrested and taken to a holding cell after realizing his settlement status was pending.

He was then driven back to France and claims to have been dropped off at the side of the road before booking a hotel in Calais.
