The The Conservative Party faces an 'existential threat' after Labor took a 33-point lead in the polls in the catastrophic fallout from Liz Truss' mini-budget, a Tory MP has claimed tonight.

Sir Charles Walker, a Tory MP, admitted the Tories would 'cease to exist as a political party' if the 33-point lead is repeated in an election.

"We made our bed, we have to lie in it," he said, speaking to Channel 4.

Meanwhile, Labor MP Jess Philips tweeted that she was 'speechless' following her party's huge points boost which saw Labor gain nine points to 54% in the polls, while the Tories are down seven to 21%.

The unprecedented YouGov pollster figures come after Ms Truss took to local radio stations in an attempt to reassure the public on his economic strategy.

Meanwhile, Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng has insisted he is "sticking" to his mini-budget, despite scaring markets and forcing an emergency intervention from the Bank of England.
