Ms Amini was detained in Tehran by the morality police for not covering her hair properly. The 22-year-old Iranian Kurd died in custody on September 16, three days after her arrest.

Her death sparked an unprecedented wave of protests across the country.

One of the captions read "join us and rise", while another read "the blood of our youth flows from your paws" .

Such displays of rebellion against Ayatollah Ali Khamenei are historically rare, and he wields near total power in Iran. But after Ms Amini's death there was widespread open dissent.

Also on Saturday, videos on social media emerged which appeared to show female students of a Tehran university chanting "get lost" during a visit by President Ebrahim Raisi.

Earlier in the day, two people were killed in Sanandaj, including a man shot dead in his car after honking his horn in support of protesters. A video shared online also showed a woman who had been shot in the neck lying unconscious on the ground in Mashhad.
