Qatar Airways has launched an internal investigation after one of its Boeing Dreamliners went down seconds after being hit water after taking off from Hamad International Airport, the carrier's hub in Doha.

The 787-8, registration A7 -BCO, left Doha at 2am on January 10 (2300 GMT, January 9), bound for Copenhagen.

After leaving the ground, the Dreamliner, with the first officer at the controls, climbed to about 1,800 feet - but then lost 1,000 feet in 24 seconds for unknown reasons, according to the AV Herald.

With the plane descending at a rate of 50 feet per second, the captain took over, pulling the plane about 800 feet - or 16 seconds - above the Arabian Gulf, reported the publication. A "readout" of the takeoff from Flightradar24.com shows the altitude dropping to 850 feet after initially reaching 1,850 feet.

According to information received by the AV Herald, the first officer was flying manually without instructions from the "flight director". This is a computer generated marker on the main flight display (which shows the horizon) that guides pilots along the correct flight path.
