Rachel Comey to Host 'Invisible Seams' Documentary Screening at SoHo Store

"Invisible Seams", a documentary filmed in New York's Garment District, is hosting a festive screening this Thursday.

Rachel Comey's SoHo Team and Store (located at 95 Crosby Street) will host the screening, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. with drinks and conversation.

The 17-minute film directed by Brooklyn-based filmmaker Jia Li (also from the "Spicy Village" docushort and the HBO show "Take Out" with Lisa Ling) showcases the talent of the Garment District's seasoned seamstresses and pattern makers. Challenging a number of misconceptions and fashion issues that still exist behind "Made in New York" fashion, the documentary highlights the stories of eight Asian women business owners, like Yaqi Sun of Atelier YQS and One to 13 Studio's Nay Huang, among others - who are a dynamic garment workforce.

Rachel Comey will be joined by director Jia Li, Inni Choi and Ai Qin Shi from the team of Rachel Comey, and Jodie Chan, and executive producer of the film.

Chan said the night would be a time to "celebrate everyone" and further , to highlight the problems at hand. In a past interview with WWD, she pointed out, "It's a human interest story, not an Asian story...Of course, I think that's just a small part of the industry, and there's has so many other people – Latin pattern makers, Indian embroiderers. – whose stories should continue to be shared. At this time, we felt it was very important to bring this specific story together to celebrate these women who have done so much for the industry. They deserve this moment."

In addition to some screenings, the film was also entered into film festivals, including the New York Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and SCAD Savannah Film Festival (of which it is part of the short documentary film lineup). It is also available on Vimeo.
