Rishi Sunak admitted someone had to learn how to use a contactless card machine after he was photographed struggling with one during a photoshoot.

The 42-year-old former chancellor struggled to pay for petrol in March from this year apparently unfamiliar with everyday technology.

The episode raised questions about whether the man in charge of the country's finances and one of the wealthiest MPs of the country has never done his own shopping.

When asked during a leadership contest in Darlington on Tuesday night, the most embarrassing thing that happened to him was Mr Sunak said:

"The most embarrassing thing that ever happened to me e is that I had trouble paying for gas in a car that wasn't my own.

"Right? So I think you all know, right?"

The ex-Chancellor, who is trailing Liz Truss in the polls to replace Boris Johnson, added: "Since then, someone taught me how to use this contactless machine. .

"And I'm telling you, it's an incredible modern marvel this technology these days!"

The March episode happened during a coup advertisement for a 5 pence cut in fuel tax, while he filled a Kia Rio car with his own money.

Mr. Sunak and his wife Akshata Murty are on the Sunday Times rich list thanks to Ms Murthy's £690m stake in Infosys, a company founded by her father.

Falling back on suggestions that he had always been privileged, Mr Sunak told last night's hustings: "I wasn't born that way."
