A Chinese man scammed a mother and son for an estimated £17,250 while pretending to date them at the same time.

The fraudster, whose surname is Song, is now being prosecuted for dumping the mother and son of thousands of people after he struck up a relationship with them on Chinese app WeChat.

The scammer, who has been dubbed the 'God of Online Dating' on social media, was living in Gansu province when he met the mother, identified only by her surname Jiang, on the street , according to .

When they first met, which was in the spring of 2018, Song asked her if she was single and they exchanged contact details.

Within a short time, the couple were dating, and by the end of the year, Song had met his girlfriend's son, Li.

The scammer offered to set Li up with a girlfriend, but just gave her a fake WeChat account and pretended to be the new love.

After telling Jiang he was in love with her, he asked her to hand over £8,625 to pay the workers on his farm.

At the same time, he took around £7,380 from his son while claiming the new 'girlfriend' needed the money for a friend's medical bills and his father's hospital bills .

The elaborate scam continued for five years until the mother and son reported their concerns to the police in February.
