Rooney back in MLS and D.C. United as manager

July 11 - Former England captain Wayne Rooney has agreed to terms to coach D.C. United in Major League Soccer, the club he played for in 2018 and 2019.

Rooney reportedly said he had "a few things to work out" with the contract, but was looking forward to the "challenge" of coaching United, who lost 7-0 at Philadelphia on Friday, tying a record the MLS for the biggest margin of defeat. DC is 13th in the Eastern Conference standings after nine losses in 16 games.

Once the deal is done and he receives a work permit, reports indicate that Rooney will take over the reins from interim coach Chad Ashton.

Rooney resigned as Derby County manager last month after 18 months in charge.

But the 36-year-old's stock as a manager is high following the impressive job he has done under financial constraints at Derby who were relegated to the third tier of English football in May.
